‘LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild The Galaxy’ Review: ‘What If..?’ But With ‘Star Wars’

After The Acolyte, Disney+ and Star Wars is back for a brand new show that, even though it’s not as “big,” it manages to satisfy children and maybe some adults. But I think LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild The Galaxy is one made for fans, this is literally what our Star Wars What If…? would look like. And hey! It worked (sometimes)!

The entire Star Wars Galaxy gets completely mixed up when an ordinary nerf-herder, Sig Greebling (Gaten Matarazzo), unearths a powerful artifact from a hidden Jedi temple. He finds himself thrust into adventure in a new, wondrously wild and twisted version of the galaxy where good guys are bad, bad guys are good, and the fate of all depends on Sig becoming the hero who can put all the pieces back together.

With many voices returning, Rebuild The Galaxy brings a lot of references and enjoyable themes for the old Star Wars fans. All the nostalgia included in this show is already worth watching if you’re a fan, you see evil versions of heroes and hero versions of villains. Gaten Matarazzo joins this universe as Sig, a very involving character that was definitely enough to lead this extremely short show. Gaten did an amazing job as a voice actor and I think that we are definitely getting a season 2 for this show, so it’ll be nice to see him returning.

Once they “rebuild the galaxy” everything goes crazy, you’ll see evil Rey and Jedi Vader, something you would never thought you’d see in your entire life. So the best part of this whole series is indeed the nostalgia and the references behind it. The problem is that the story fails a lot in terms of delivering something fresh to this universe. This features an extremely generic story that will for sure satisfy kids but it feels like the script was just too lazy. There are a lot of similarities to The Lego Movie, from the story to some characters, it feels like it’s the same thing but with Star Wars. So as I mentioned What If…? and The Lego Movie, this show just never felt unique, yet just something based off already existed stories. The visuals are great considering that it’s a low budget show, but it’s just not enough to make it good.

I totally get it that they’re trying to develop a story that is easy for kids to follow and enjoy, with no complicated plot points or anything and I do think they do that really well, but I think kids also deserve a good and different story, because I can assure they will forget about the experience they had with this show. The ending is definitely a good point about it, it’s a fitting “conclusion” to a story that we knew how it was gonna end. I am looking forward to Season 2 and see what the future awaits for this series, which in 4 episodes, wasn’t able to explore enough of this different world, or should I say, galaxy.

LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild The Galaxy is generic and bland, however, it has enough references to make it worth for this saga’s old fans. Imagine What If…? but with Star Wars, that’s what you get…
