It’s real, we finally have a proper, organized, and very “comic booky“ DC universe coming out. After the acclaimed film Superman released last year, people been eager to watch the next chapter of this universe and maybe take a look at how all of these films will connect. We had also TV shows like Creature Commandos and Peacemaker Season 2 but each of those projects feeling quite standalone and as of now nothing has yet been teased for where this universe is going next. The newest addition to this new franchise, Supergirl, is finally releasing in theaters and we keep wondering whether this film is an improvement or a step down compared to where it all started? Or maybe same level…? Well…
“Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, joins forces with an unlikely companion on an interstellar journey of vengeance and justice when an unexpected adversary strikes too close to home.”

Supergirl is very different from Superman. It’s another style, another story, another character—it’s a totally different thing, and I really like that they chose this path. However, the creative choices that were made in this film are what made me so disappointed. Even though I can say I enjoyed it, I will say this film is far worse than James Gunn’s Superman, and that’s because of how generic the plot was, how bland some characters were written, and how some action scenes just did not land for me, among many other factors that kept me from having the best time of my life. Because honestly… this film had everything it needed to be the most fun you’d have in a theater this year.
Milly Alcock is a star, a highlight; she’s the best thing about Supergirl. The way she embodies the character is so satisfying and funny. You relate to her, you feel what she feels, and you root for her. Another honorable mention is Jason Momoa as Lobo. This would’ve been awful if it weren’t for him. He’s funny, he’s cool, he’s just perfect, and Jason was really born for this role.
However, I can’t say the same about the rest of the characters. We have this little girl called Ruthye, and I just thought her story was so generic that I couldn’t care less about her. And the villain… well, the villain is by far the worst part of this film. The performance itself was just not great. He was not scary, he didn’t feel like a menace, he was just delaying the inevitable, which, in this case, was Supergirl catching him somehow. He’s just not as powerful as her, and that’s obvious throughout the entire film. There was just no sense of danger.

Overall, it’s a very generic film, but it still can be a great time at the theater. It’s enjoyable; it’s a simple adventure through space, very similar to Star Wars. But I can’t ignore the fact that this film has many problems. I wish it had more action, better visuals, and just the heart and soul that Superman had. I am very excited to see what’s next for this universe, so let’s wait and hope that Clayface is an even better film. DC Studios is off to a very solid start, and we’re extremely excited for the future.
Milly Alcock and Jason Momoa shine in ‘SUPERGIRL’. However, a very generic plot, weak action sequences, and bland visuals make this just an “okay” superhero adventure.
