‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ Review: More Of The Same, For Better Or Worse

The idea of bringing back the Jurassic World franchise only 3 years after ending a mediocre trilogy feels like such a risk. But if they’re doing this, then I guess it means it’s because they got a great story to tell, right?! I mean we have David Koepp writing the script and Gareth Edwards directing! How could this possibly go wrong. Well I’d never thought I’d be saying this but Jurassic World: Rebirth is a mid-tier film that is incapable of justifying why it even exists.

“Five years post-Jurassic World: Dominion (2022), an expedition braves isolated equatorial regions to extract DNA from three massive prehistoric creatures for a groundbreaking medical breakthrough.”

Yes, that’s the entire plot of the film. No more, no less. That’s all that the film is about. A group of people trying to extract the DNA of three different dinosaurs, and it’s 2 hours and 14 minutes of just that. I’ll tell you this, this film has basically no plot, it’s a pure nothing. The film relies on action sequences of dinosaurs chasing humans and that’s really the fun of it. All you’ll see in this film is this. Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali are definitely one of my favorite things about this film. If it wasn’t for the cast, this film would be doomed.

There are definitely some remarkable scenes, highlighting one where they’re extracting the DNA of the second dinosaur. That’s all you need to know. You gotta witness to experience it. The film is silly sometimes, and also can be scary… but also can be dull… or feel very soulless… this film really is the definition of mixed bag.

There is a subplot throughout the entire film where we see this random family trying to survive from the dinosaurs and honestly I’ll say that I did throughly enjoy that subplot. While I feel most will think it’s a stupid, dumb and whatever subplot, I was actually invested with the characters and I feel like I cared about them. But I don’t wanna be mean but all this “Dolores” thing is just so forced and it’s just the studio trying to sell merch, because that character was just thrown into that movie in the most random way possible.

Jurassic World: Rebirth has no plot at all — it’s two hours of dinosaurs chasing humans, and I guess that’s all we need from a franchise that’s felt like it’s been downgrading since the original. A soulless yet entertaining adventure with a stellar cast and stunning visuals.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Jurassic World: Rebirth releases in theaters on July 2.
