It’s been a little bit over an year since Velma released and automatically became one of the most hated shows of all time. And above all things, I must confess that I’m not part of the haters, Id say season 1 was actually pretty decent. Even though the humor failed a lot, the story was mostly interesting and all the mystery involved was entertaining to follow… And even with all the hate, audiences were surprised when Max announced a 2nd season for the series, continuing the story right where they left us off.
When an even spookier mystery grips Crystal Cove, Velma (Mindy Kaling) must find a way to balance her detective work with the demands of her newfound popularity before it’s too late.

Something that I’ve been saying since the first season is: this show could’ve been way better (and more well received) if it didn’t mess up with the Scooby Doo IP. I think that the fact they changed each character’s personality and removed Scooby Doo himself is what truly made people mad but some are too afraid to assume so they’ll just say it was terrible without even watching. Velma Season 2 is no masterpiece but it’s still average, it’s hard for me to tell you if it’s better than season 1 but I’d probably say that, overall, it’s not.
This season definitely introduces some elements that the first season didn’t have, but it still falls a bit short. Some character arcs are better, especially Norville’s. It’s interesting to see him struggle and try to move on from the fact that he actually killed someone in the first season. It really makes you feel for him and gets you invested in his storyline. On the other hand, Velma doesn’t seem to be going through as much as she did in the first season. Her main focus now is just figuring out who the new murderer in town is. The story feels pretty similar to the first season, but they try to make it different by changing motivations and such. Overall, it’s not bad, but it could have been better.

One of the things that made this season feel weak was the sense of repetition from the first season. But hey, at least the jokes are better in this one. The first season had a lot of bad and unfunny jokes, which was a bummer. Thankfully, this new season makes up for it with a higher quantity of “better” and funnier jokes. It’s definitely a step in the right direction.
Velma Season 2 is a decent continuation, yet it still doesn’t manage to be as amusing as it could. The humor is better, but the story is essentially the same thing: a generic detective game. I don’t know if they’ll continue with this show, and I have my doubts. But, I guess we’ll wait and see…
