‘Robot Dreams’ Review: A Cute And Deep Story About Two Unusual Friends

Robot Dreams has a a special place in my heart, not even because it’s incredibly good because honestly it’s just good, but the movie really managed to deliver such a deep, thoughtful and powerful message and story through a movie that seemed to have the most generic plot ever, and wow it really surprised me.

The story follows Dog, who lives in Manhattan and he’s tired of being alone. One day he decides to build himself a robot, a companion. Their friendship blossoms, until they become inseparable, to the rhythm of 80’s NYC. One summer night, Dog, with great sadness, is forced to abandon Robot at the beach. Will they ever meet again?

Robot Dreams is a silent movie, which adds to its uniqueness. Making a silent movie requires a lot of skill and understanding to get it right, and this movie definitely delivers. The story of Dog, who is lonely and longing for a friend, and then meeting Robot, who may be a machine but has such a big heart, is truly beautiful to watch. It’s amazing how emotions can be conveyed without words.

The movie had some pacing issues for me. It felt so long for a story that could’ve fit into a short film easily. This doesn’t change the fact that the movie used its runtime to add cute, unforgettable yet unnecessary plot elements. We see Robot stuck on the beach for the whole movie, Dog’s pain is so touching, and you get so anxious to see how this movie will end and if both friends will finally meet each other again. It’s beautiful to watch.

Even though this is such a debatable discussion, I didn’t really like the movie’s ending (which I won’t spoil here), I just felt like it was building up for something else and then you get hit by a “oh so this is how we’re ending, I mean, it’s cool and cute but not what I wanted to be honest.” Honestly, Robot Dreams is good, not wonderful, but simply good, and this is all it was meant to be. It’ll definitely bring you up some tears.

Robot Dreams delivers what it was promised. It’s a cute, fun, simple, and emotional movie that even with its simple plot, managed to bring an amusing and entertaining story that will touch hearts. A movie that even with some flaws and some pacing issues still had me crying and laughing of joy.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
