‘Invincible’ Season 2 Part 2 Episode 5 Review: He’s Back!

Invincible is back! It has been a long four months, waiting for Season Two’s return since November and some may argue whether it was worth the wait, but either way, it’s finally here and back on PrimeVideo and better than ever.

PREVIOUSLY ON INVINCIBLE

The first part of Invincible Season Two did a good job of setting up a lot of storylines that still need resolving. King Lizard killed Supreme Lizard, vouching that things would be changing for the Lizard Squad with him in charge. Allen was beaten to near death by three Viltriumites who wanted information on Mark, Earth, and Nolan. Donald finds out about his death and begins to question who and what he is, though this wasn’t the biggest revelation of episode four.

The biggest revelation we discover in episodes 3 and 4 is that Nolan has made a new life for himself on Thraxxa and has a new wife and son. As this is all being revealed to Mark, the Viltrumites come to invade, leading to a big battle between Nolan, Mark, and the three Viltrumites. Though they put up a good fight, they unfortunately lose, and Nolan is taken back to Viltrium to be executed, while Mark is tasked with Nolan’s original mission to prepare Earth for Viltrium’s invasion or else the planet will be destroyed.

Invincible Tackles Guilt, Identity Crisis And PTSD

Episode Five wastes no time in resuming where we left off—the aftermath of Mark’s battle with the Viltrumites, which led to the destruction of Thraxan cities. A major arc that Mark has been going through during Part 1 of Season 2, which is now continuing into Part 2, is that Mark doesn’t want to become what his father is; he doesn’t want to kill and cause destruction. Now, with the destruction of these cities, part of that unspoken prophecy has come true, as he blames his father, alongside himself, for the destruction of Thraxan cities.

This leads Mark to help them rebuild their city, and though it might be a good gesture, it’s expected of him as a hero. It’s clear from the previous scene that Mark is having trouble fighting his guilt, and this is his way of repenting. They soon beg Mark to take his half-brother with him back to Earth, as they don’t want him to live a life without parents, as they’re known to age very quickly, which is shown as she looks considerably older compared to the last scene that we saw her in. Though he’s hesitant to leave them as he still wants to help around, he agrees and takes his half-brother back with him to earth.

A lot has happened on Earth while Mark has been away, as it has been two months since he left. One of the biggest revelations, besides Mark’s half-brother, was Donald finding out that he’s a cyborg. Donald takes up the courage to finally confront Cecil, forcing everyone to leave the room so that Cecil’s attention can be brought to him. Cecil takes Donald into the white room, where he shows him the truth but, at the same time, still manages to sprinkle some lies into why he’s become a cyborg. In this scene, Cecil manages to show no remorse by telling Donald, “You’re you, but better, stronger, alive.” This episode showcases just how controlling Cecil can be with how he handles Donald’s reaction and confesses to listening to Debbie without her permission and wanting to take in Mark’s half-brother. Not only is this causing Donald to have an identity crisis, but he’s also suffering from PTSD as he has hallucinations of his cyborg body attacking him.

Mark isn’t the only character in this episode who is struggling to deal with his guilt and finding ways to deal with it such as taking in his half-brother. Eve is still suffering from the first part after she tragically got people injured after trying to construct a playground with no actual knowledge of the structural integrity of the neighbourhood. This unfortunate event led to another unfortunate event which caused two elderly people to go hospital as she took out her rage on Killcannon. She decides to return home to her parents in the first part but in this episode, Rex Splode reassures her that she has always done more good than bad and manages to still do so.

Invincible Pulls Out The Cliffhanger Already

The final act of this episode splits up into two major battles. Invincible heads into space with the Guardians of the Globe to stop the Sequids from reaching Earth. Back down on Earth, the remaining Guardians of the Globe (Rex Splode, Dupli-Kate, and Shrinking Rae) have to stop the Lizard League, who have taken over a Neucler missile silo. The team in space struggles as their ship is blown up straight away as it has no defences. Robot makes a joke saying that this isn’t “Star Trek,” which is ironic as this is a world with superheroes, the multiverse, and aliens, so almost anything could be possible, but it seems shields on spaceships aren’t one of them.

Atom Eve manages to save them in her bubble, and with the help of the flying members of the team, they force their way into the ship but are unfortunately overrun by thousands of Sequids. On Earth, Rex Splode, Dupli-Kate, and Shrinking Rae are having their own problems. Though they make an attempt to stop Iguana, Salamandar, and Komodo Dragon, Dupli-Kate and Shrinking Rae meet their untimely deaths in the most creative but gruesome fashion. With Komodo Dragon as the last remaining member, Rex Splode manages to kill him by allowing him to bite his hand, which had an explosive, causing it to blow his head up. Rex Splode gains a moment of sad victory, but King Lizard makes his appearance and aims his gun at Rex Splode’s head.

Will Invincible, Atom Eve, Robot, The Immortal, Black Samson, Monster Girl, Bulletproof and Shapesmith survive the Sequid attack in outer space? Will someone come to rescue Rex Splode at the last minute? These are questions that won’t be answered until the next episode.

Episode Five leaves off on a crazy cliffhanger but gives us a post-credit scene that answers the question of whether Allen is alive or not. Allen awakes to his new ripped body that can now handle the punch of a Viltrumite and Thadeus reveals that he gambled with his life in the hope that he wouldn’t die and that this would happen. Thadeus also reveals that he is a Viltrumite, the only one to rebel against the empire but after hearing of Invincible, tasks Allen with bringing Mark to him as it’s possible he’ll be the one to change the tide of the war.

Invincible Season Two Part Two Episode 5 returns with an absolute banger of an episode with an insane cliffhanger making people have to wait longer after waiting four months for this just one episode. The episode heavily dives into guilt and shows how it can be handled in different ways and while some more questions do get asked, some questions do finally get answered.
