It’s been 15 years since the last TRON film, and I would’ve never thought that we would be back to this universe but here we are… TRON: Ares is just a lazy and unnecessary entry to this franchise. There’s no point in doing this film but here it is. But hey! It’s visually perfect and has a killer score. I think that’s enough, right? Or maybe not, let’s not forget Jared Leto is leading this…
The film follows “Ares, an advanced program sent from the digital realm into the physical world on a perilous mission, marking humanity’s first contact with artificial intelligence beings.”

When you think of TRON you think of epic action scenes and some great visuals and CGI, and yes, I can confirm that this is easily one of the best looking films of the year. Watching this in an IMAX theater really did help with my experience with it. The only issue this film has is the script, and you have no idea how much this affects the movie. It doesn’t matter if you have a great score and visuals, if your story sucks, then automatically you’ll suck somehow. And I gotta be honest, TRON: Ares has an absurdly generic and lazy plot that is massively predictable and sometimes even embarrassing.
The cast is another problem here, Jared Leto is just not it, I get that his character is supposed to be “emotionless” but he’s just not good. I never cared for his character nor laughed to any joke he said (there are quite a couple). Greta Lee is the real scene stealer, she does an amazing job on bringing this supporting role to life. It just feels so weird seeing Greta Lee and Jared Leto working together that it just doesn’t feel real. Evan Peters and Jodie Turner-Smith are just really bad villains, but it’s not even their fault. It’s all about the script, it did not know how to write a good villain and give him reasonable motivations, it’s so generically stupid that those villains just genuinely pissed me off after a while.

I gotta praise Nine Inch Nails and their fucking epic soundtrack, every time I heard that music inside that theater my ears started to explode (in a good way). They really managed to deliver a soundtrack that matches the vibe of the old films without feeling repetitive, the best thing about the movie for me. The CGI is really perfect as well, you can see every penny used in that budget right on the screen. It’s a very harmless film but extremely pointless. I’m really surprised Disney even made this, it’s not like it’s gonna bring a lot of profit though, TRON has never been a massive franchise, I think…
TRON: Ares has a very dull plot, terribly written characters but the perfect visuals and absolute killer soundtrack saves this film from being a complete bomb. I had a fun time with it.
