‘The Spiderwick Chronicles‘ has been out for roughly a week now, and we had the wonderful chance to speak with Jack Dylan Grazer, who plays Thimbletack, and Alyvia Alyn Lind, who plays Calliope, who spoke to us about their journeys with ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles.’
THH: I wanted to get two silly questions that have been on my mind out of the way. They’re catered to both of you in different ways. So, Jack, I wanted to know, in this world of ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’, with ogres, trolls, and boggarts. How would Freddy from ‘Shazam!’ survive in this world?
Jack Dylan Grazer: Dude, he would love em! He would love these guys. I think he would know everything there is to know about every single one. He would go up to Thimbletack and be like, That’s a quick twist of a sniff, if I’ve ever seen one. Classic little guy, and I love every single inch about his demeanour. He’s a fragile little figure, but never the less, quite powerful. Good question!
THH: And for you, Alyvia, how would Chucky survive in ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’ world?
Alyvia Alyn Lind: [laughs] I think Chucky would kill everything, sadly. He’d be like, What the f word is going on? He would just be so mad, and he’d be like, Why is everybody making everything so cute and mystical, and then he’d just kill everything, horrendously, which is very sad. But I think he’d have fun; he’d be frolicking around… He’s supernatural; it’s kind of his world. It’s mystical and different; maybe he’d have a blast. I don’t know; you’d have to ask him.
THH: Maybe I’ll get to ask him one day! I have another question for you, Alyvia. You got to work with Aron on the Netflix show ‘Daybreak’ which unfortunately got cancelled. Was there anything you learned from ‘Daybreak’ that you brought onto the set of ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’?
Alyvia Alyn Lind: Daybreak and Spiderwick are now like, definitely, my top best shows I’ve ever worked on, largely because of Aaron, cause he’s just the best ever, and I remember when I got the audition for Spiderwick, I saw his name, and I was like, I wanna do it! I want to be a part of it. Everything that he does or he touches, I want to be a part of.
So I was really, really, really excited. And also, Angelica literally is a part of me forever now. I think I’ve learned so much from her, and she was so much fun to play. And I think there’s a lot of Angelica in Calliope. They’re very much the same. There’s also for Daybreak fans, if you are a Daybreak fan when you watch the show, there is a line that I say at some point in the show that I also said in Daybreak that Aaron used as a callback.
THH: We do have some Daybreak fans that will be watching this, so that’ll be good for them.
Alyvia Alyn Lind: Figure out the line, and then DM me or something, and I’ll respond.
THH: Jack, For you, you started doing voice acting recently, for the past few years, and, honestly, you’re phenomenal at it. I wanted to ask how your journey has been with that. And how it was with the Spiderwick Chronicles, and also when you first got to meet everyone, because I’m assuming you would have been in a booth in a studio somewhere away from everyone else.
Jack Dylan Grazer: I was living in Los Angeles at the time when I found out that I got a part, and I was driving around. I was on the phone with Kat Corio, the director, and, Aron, the showrunner and writer, and they said that I got the part, and I was driving around. I guess they could tell that I was driving sort of erratic, due to my excitement, and they said, Jack, why don’t you pull over, take a breather, and I said, okay, sure, and then I started recording about three, four, or five months later, and I was in Nashville at the time, and we were recording in an incredible, incredible recording studio. That people like Keith Whitley, Boom, Boom Thompson, and the one and only Dolly Parton got to record in.
The point is that it was a lot of fun creating Thimbletack. And I went in there with ideas for a voice. I started doing the piratey leprechauny sort of thing, and they were like, What are you doing? This is too much. I said, Okay, well, what do you want me to do? and they said, “Well, just be a teenager. Just do like a 2000-year-old teenager, his voice cracks; he’s a squeaker; he’s kind of a wild little munchkin, but he’s a teenager. But then later on in the line, they implemented a lot of my growls and my creature-like sounds and mixed them in, sort of mutant, making a mutant out of me, which I think is kind of b
