I feel like from all of the films I’ve seen this year, most of them were disappointments, films where I had really high expectation and they ended up not being half as good as I wanted it to be. Unfrosted fits the opposite side, it’s a film that I had 0 expectations for and it ended up being such a pleasant surprise. After how terrible Pain Hustlers was, I don’t know what to expect from another Netflix movie telling the story of how a small business became a huge business, but this is definitely not the case at all!
In 1963, Unfrosted takes place and tells the story of Kellogg’s employees who engage in a fierce and fast-paced competition with Post to develop the Pop-Tart. You’ll never know what from this story is true and what’s not, most of it edges the absurd so expect this to be a very fictional story because it is!
I didn’t watch the trailer for this film so I when I started it I had 0 expectation and I had no clue of how this film would even look like. Well, the beginning is great! It introduces us to the 1960’s world with great production designs and whimsical shots that gives the magical touch to this story, I was intrigued from the moment this started and I knew this would be a fun watch. The humor is something crucial in this film and I must say Jerry Seinfeld does an incredible job with this, it’s no surprise considering his iconic Seinfeld series which became a 1980’s classic and still has lots of fans around the world to this day.
Unfrosted is that type of comfortable and easy watch that tells a lovely yet extremely simple story but manages to delight the viewer with its intriguing and extremely funny characters. Jerry Seinfeld, Melissa McCarthy, and Jim Gaffigan are the lead trio and they kill it, they deliver great performances and the humor is on the perfect tone, some jokes working better than others but most of it works. Hugh Grant is more of an antagonist, he wants justice for his job and he won’t stop fighting for it, and with that you’ll get to see one of the funniest scenes of this movie. Amy Schumer also plays an antagonist. I cannot forget to mention the GREAT cameos this film provided, expect some good ones, I loved to see some actors that ended up showing up on these.
All the technical parts of this movie like the production design itself, the score and the costume design, are crucial things that helped making this film even more enjoyable and totally delightful. It’s not a film that escapes from flaws, some jokes doesn’t work, the pacing is mostly great but they try to force the bar sometimes but I’d be lying if I told you this wasn’t a fun time.
Unfrosted gives Jerry Seinfeld a delightful directorial debut. A whimsical and enjoyable story that manages to deliver funny jokes and cameos, a (almost) great cast, and amazing production design. A total easy watch and if you’re a fan of comedies this one should work really well with you.
