Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, And Chloe East Tells Us About The Mysteries And Twists Behind A24’s ‘Heretic’ (Exclusive)

It’s no surprise that Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East are all amazing actors and they managed to provide us one of the best, most unique horror films of the year. Heretic follows two missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who attempt to convert a reclusive Englishman, only to realize he is more dangerous than he seems.

As the film is now playing in theaters, we exclusive interviewed the main stars of the film to talk about their experience behind the scenes and teases what fans can expect from this upcoming film. Read it below…

THH for Sophie: What are you most excited for people to see in Heretic without giving away any spoilers? Do you have any behind the scenes memories that were most remarkable for you?

SOPHIE: I’m excited for people to see Hugh Grant being an absolute freak. And yeah, me and Chloe got really close. She’s like, the kindest and funniest person ever and it was nice to have that because the film itself was kind of a traumatizing experience because it’s a hard movie to act in.

THH for Sophie: You’ve been in many horror films in the past, from The Boogyman to Companion, that comes out next year. How do you differ those roles from this role in Heretic.

SOPHIE: It’s different, it’s more psychological, more “heady.” The characters are different, there was kind of a backstory for her. The directors asked for us to write this backstory and I just went fully into it, chapter after chapter and I had a blast. It was a very fun preparation that I haven’t had in a while.

THH for Hugh: What attracted you in Heretic’s script? What convinced you to join the project?

HUGH: I thought it was cool! I thought it was unusual, inventive as a script and as a part I thought it was very weird but also very fun even though he’s dark as hell.

THH for Hugh: You have a long and amazing career in Hollywood, how does this role’s preparation differ from the ones you had in previous films you acted in.

HUGH: The film itself didn’t require anything new but throughout the years I feel like my preparation for roles just take longer and longer. I used to have a 10 page biography of the character and now I have a 500 page. It’s bonkers, yeah!

THH for Chloe: What are you most excited for audience to experience in Heretic?

CHLOE: Hmmm.. I’m excited for audiences to jump in some unexpected parts, yeah, you know, and I’m curious. I’m excited to see where people are laughing, every time I watch a movie I just be like “where do people laugh, what are people doing.” But yeah, the movie goes places you don’t think it’s gonna go so I’m very curious to talk to my friends after and see what they thought of it!
