After many rumors and a long search, James Gunn has finally confirmed the actors who will play Superman and Lois Lane in his new film, Superman: Legacy. The roles will be played by David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan. James Gunn, who is the co-CEO of DC Studios, will write and direct the film.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Corenswet and Brosnahan were being considered for these roles, along with Tom Brittney and Nicholas Hoult for Superman, and Phoebe Dyvenor and Emma Mackey for Lois Lane. Gunn shared this casting news in this tweet:

Accurate! (They are not only both incredible actors, but also wonderful people).

This news has surprised some fans because The Hollywood Reporter reported that Hoult, Brittney, and Corenswet did more screen tests. Out of Phoebe Dyvenor and Emma Mackey, only Emma Mackey returned that day to play Lois Lane alongside the actors. Although it was cautioned that this didn’t guarantee Mackey the role, fans still hoped she would be chosen. However, their hopes were dashed when Rachel Brosnahan was ultimately cast as Lane, which left many fans disappointed.

What Is Superman: Legacy?

Superman: Legacy is the first film in a new DC Universe helmed by James Gunn and Peter Safran. It tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.

A Timeline of Events

It all began in October 2022 when James Gunn and Peter Safran were selected to lead DC’s film, TV, and animation efforts as co-chairs and co-CEOs of the newly formed DC Studios. Their aim for DC Studios was to create a long-term strategy for films, TV shows, animations, and games that would elevate the popular franchise to new heights of creative storytelling.

James Gunn, a well-respected filmmaker, directed the highly praised Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel for Marvel Studios. In 2018, he was fired from Marvel but then joined DC to work on The Suicide Squad, which later led to the HBO Max spinoff series, Peacemaker. After directing and writing the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Marvel, Gunn has now shifted his focus solely to DC Studios. Peter Safran has a strong relationship with DC, producing the highly successful Aquaman and its upcoming sequel, The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and Shazam! with its sequel. Safran has been working with Warner Bros for ten years, which includes the immensely successful Conjuring franchise, earning over $2 billion.

A Change Of Power

In October, Black Adam was released, hinting at the return of Henry Cavill’s Superman to the movie theaters. As power dynamics shifted in the DC Universe, both Dwayne Johnson and Henry Cavill received surprises. In December, Gunn and Cavill disclosed that Cavill wouldn’t return as Superman, as Gunn aimed to cast a younger actor for the role. Similarly, there were talks of Ben Affleck directing a new DC project, but Affleck swiftly dismissed the rumor.

After rumors of what could be announced and a long excruciating wait, Gunn and Safran announced the first chapter of the DCU titled “Gods and Monsters.” They had already assembled a writers room consisting of Jeremy Slater, Christina Hodson, Drew Goddard, Christal Henry and Tom King. Projects that weren’t part of the universe such as The Batman Part 2 and Joker: Folie à Deux, were considered as “DC Elseworlds.” Gunn and Safran announced the first ten projects of Chapter One which included Superman: Legacy, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and more.

My Personal Verdict

As a DC fan, I’m overly excited for what’s to come and I think it’s time we look into the future of DC and stop looking at the past. I was a fan of Man of Steel and Zack Snyder’s Justice League but those are now part of DC history, whether you consider it a good part of it or a bad part of it.

Zack Snyder has happily moved onto Netflix and has several projects in the work with them such as Rebel Moon, his Army of the Dead franchise and Twilight of the Gods. All projects that I’ll be supporting day one.

David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan were people part of the shortlist who I was hoping to get casted so I’m ecstatic that they’ve been picked for these roles. Corenswet performances in Hollywood show that he’s the right man for Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan gives me the perfect Lois vibes, especially Bitsie Tulloch’s Lois from CW’s Superman and Lois.

If you can’t wait for the DCU any longer, tune into Blue Beetle, coming to cinemas August 18. With Blue Beetle being considered the first DCU character by James Gunn and disconnected from the DCEU and part of the DCU by director Angel Manuel Soto and lead actor Xolo Maridueña, it’ll for sure be worth the watch and possibly the first DC film this year to be a Box Office Hit.
