June 2023 is looking to be a blockbuster season for theaters everywhere. However, movie-goers can already watch some major titles like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Fast X, which have been highly anticipated. Furthermore, The Little Mermaid, another Disney remake of a Renaissance classic, gave fans a new tease for what comes next for Halle Bailey and Jonah Hauer-King. However, these releases may have only given a taste of what the upcoming months hold for audiences worldwide.
This summer will give fans and audiences a lot to be excited for as vacation time rolls around. As we move out of May and into June, here’s our monthly movie round-up of what’s coming to theaters soon.
The Flash

Release Date: June 16, 2023
Perhaps one of the most anticipated movies of the summer, The Flash is the bridge to a new clean slate. Inspired by the events of Flashpoint, the movie shows the aftereffects of Barry Allen’s (Ezra Miller) actions following his attempts to save his family. Inadvertently creating a new reality where General Zod (Michael Shannon) has returned, Barry must team up with a Batman (Michael Keaton) of old and a Supergirl (Sasha Calle) of new to return to his universe.
The cast also includes Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen, Kiersey Clemmons as Iris West, Antje Traue as Faora-Ul, and Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth. In addition, The Flash holds a ton of cameos that will definitely surprise audiences and two interesting post-credit scenes that have alluded pre-release fan screenings.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Release Date: June 2, 2023
However, fans can also expect a huge Marvel-Sony drop this week with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Following a year after the events of Into the Spider-Verse, Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) is trying to balance his work as a normal kid and a hero. However, he gets approached by Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) to help save the multiverse from a new villain: the Spot (Jason Schwartzman). Along their journey, Miles comes to meet the Spider Society, led by Miguel O’Hara (Oscar Isaac). Will Miles, Gwen, and the Society do what it takes to save the multiverse?
The cast also includes Brian Tyree Henry as Jefferson Davis, Luna Lauren Vélez as Rio Morales, Jake Johnson as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Issa Rae as Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman, Karan Soni as Pavitr Prabhakar/Spider-Man India, Daniel Kaluuya as Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk, Andy Samberg as Ben Reilly, and Amandla Stenberg as Spider-Byte.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

Release Date: June 9, 2023
While superheroes dominate the spotlight, fans also highly anticipate Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Set alongside Bumblebee, the film follows Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos), an electronics expert, and Elena Wallace (Dominique Fishback), a researcher, as they uncover a secret war. The conflict involves the Autobots led by Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen), the Predacons led by Optimus Primal (Ron Perlman), and the Terrorcons led by Scourge (Peter Dinklage), all centered around the world-devouring Unicron (Colman Domingo) and the fate of Earth.
The cast also includes Pete Davidson as Mirage, Liza Koshy as Arcee, Cristo Fernández as Wheeljack, Michelle Yeoh as Airazor, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez as Nightbird, David Sobolov as Rhinox and Battletrap, Tongayi Chirisa as Cheetor, and John DiMaggio as Transit and Stratosphere.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Release Date: June 30, 2023
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny faces uncertainty after a mixed reception at Cannes. Harrison Ford returns as Indiana Jones in a search for the Antikythera, a powerful time-twisting dial, held by Nazi Jürgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen). Voller and other ex-Nazis are actively aiding the U.S. government in the Space Race against the Soviets, while Jones, a professor, has remained stuck in his job. When Jones’ goddaughter Helena Shaw (Phoebe-Waller Bridge) brings him back to the adventure, they must find the dial before it’s too late.
The main cast also includes Antonio Banderas as Renaldo and John Rhys-Davies as Sallah.
Elemental

Release Date: June 16, 2023
Pixar is coming back into the limelight with its newest film, Elemental, following its last release, Lightyear. Set within a world manifested from the core elements, the film centers around the fiery Ember (Leah Lewis) and the adaptable Wade (Mamoudou Athie) as they go on a personal journey to discover their closer relationship with one another. The film recently premiered at Cannes alongside Indiana Jones.
The cast includes Ronnie del Carmen, Shila Ommi, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Catherine O’Hara, and Mason Wertheimer.
Asteroid City

Release Date: June 16, 2023
Outside the heavy hitters, Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City may just hold the biggest ensemble cast of the month. Set in 1995, the film focuses on a group of students and their parents who go on to explore themselves during a convention in a fictionalized American town.
The cast includes Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schrieber, Steve Carell, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, Maya Hawke, Hong Chau, Stephen Park, Rupert Friend, Matt Dillon, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan, Jeff Goldblum, Sophia Lillis, Fisher Steven, Ethan Josh Lee, Grace Edwards, Aristou Meehan, Rita Wilson, Jarvis Cocker, and Bob Balaban.
Ruby Gilman, Teenage Kraken

Release Date: June 30, 2023
Dreamworks is also making a return, like Pixar, following the grand reception of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish with Ruby Gilman, Teenage Kraken. The film follows shy teenage kraken Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor) as she attempts to fit into human society. In her quest to fit in with her crush Connor (Jaboukie Young-White), Ruby faces obstacles from her mother (Toni Collette) and grandmother (Jane Fonda), who reveal Ruby’s destined inheritance of the throne. However, the popular new girl Chelsea (Annie Murphy) disrupts Ruby’s attempts to fit in as Ruby discovers Chelsea is a mermaid. With all these problems, Ruby must figure out how to embrace her true self.
The cast includes Sam Richardson, Colman Domingo, Liza Koshy, Eduardo Franco, and Ramona Young.
The Boogeyman

Release Date: June 2, 2023
Perhaps the most standout of this list, The Boogeyman is one of the more scarier titles releasing theatrically this month. The film follows high school student Sadie Harper (Sophie Thatcher) and her sister Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair) following their mother’s death. The two are taken in by their cold-mannered psychiatrist father Will (Chris Messina), but their lives are soon turned for the worse after a desperate patient comes looking for Will’s help. Now haunted by a paranormal entity, the family must come to resolve themselves before their suffering, and the entity, consumes them.
The cast includes Marin Ireland, Madison Hu, LisaGay Hamilton, and David Dastmalchian.
