Zack Snyder’s ‘Rebel Moon’: Release Date, Cast, Plot, and More

Zack Snyder is creating another universe in his Full Circle with a new space epic in 'Rebel Moon.'

From the creative mind of Zack Snyder comes the new epic space opera film, Rebel Moon. A great amount of information has been revealed recently thanks to Netflix’s TUDUM. Luckily, The Hollywood Handle is here to keep you up to date on all the news that has dropped thus far.

Behind-The-Scenes History

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon originally was a pitch for his Star Wars project to Lucasfilm. It intended to draw inspiration from George Lucas’s original inspiration: Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. Sadly, it fell through when Disney acquired Lucasfilm. However, Snyder was able to revisit the idea and have it take place in its own universe with Netflix’s help. Netflix cemented a deal and partnered with Snyder’s production company Stone Quarry Productions, producers of the very successful Army of the Dead.

Originally, the plan was to make just one movie. The script for this movie was quite long, with 172 pages, which would have resulted in a three-hour-long film. However, Scott Stuber, Netflix films chairman, had concerns about this idea as Netflix wasn’t known for producing such lengthy movies. The Snyders refused to shorten the film, valuing the characters and their stories’ depth. Eventually, they reached an agreement to split the film into two parts, similar to Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill films.

Netflix also confirmed earlier to The New York Times that Rebel Moon would be the first in a trilogy, starting what could be a huge franchise. In addition, Snyder stated to The Hollywood Reporter that his hope was that “[Rebel Moon] also becomes a massive IP and universe that can be built out.”

Zack Snyder has already begun developing multiple projects set in the Rebel Moon universe. Earlier this year, Snyder appeared on The Nerd Queens podcast and teased that they were working on an RPG set in this universe, teasing that it was “so immersive and so intense and so huge.” The video game project is yet to have a developer announced and is most likely early in development. Snyder also announced in the same podcast that an animated short and graphic novel were also in the works.

The future of Rebel Moon is looking very bright, you now know how the movie came around. However, what exactly is it about, who’s starring in it and when will it be streaming?
