If there are any movies that didn’t need a sequel, that movie was ‘Orphan’ and yet they decided to do it, and apparently they proved that this sequence was really necessary…
‘Orphan: First Kill’ tells the story that no one asked for but will probably like to see, the event of the fire that killed her “parents” and that was then what caused her to become an orphan in the first film released more than 10 years ago. Leena, a psychopathic girl with a disease that makes her not grow up and at the age of 30 seems to be 8, after fleeing the asylum, she decides to flee to America and pretend to be a missing daughter of a couple. The story is not something that looks so great, but then comes all the twists that the story brings that make the viewer get involved with the plot.
The problem I feel in this movie is that even though it is fine, it shows that it was released very late, the actress who plays Leena is clearly older, of course, and this makes you think that the characters are simply stupid, how come a father does not recognize his daughter even though she is 4 years missing? Parents, especially those who really love their children, usually remember every unique detail that their child has, but so far I’ve just ignored it and let the movie flow.
The film manages to match the violence and the great horror scenes that the first movie had, the dark tone and all the tension that Leena brings when she appears on the screen, Isabelle Fuhrman does a GREAT job as the main character, she really makes the viewer afraid, she really transmits that she wants to see blood!
Another point that I must highlight that bothered me a lot was the fact that EVERY time we saw Leena on her back, I could notice that she was another younger actress, of course it is normal since the actress is probably taller and putting a stuntman there is completely understandable, but I think it bothered me sometimes because it was something I noticed a lot and not only in one scene. The cast does a great job, each character has its own characteristic, I think that because it is a movie with few characters, it is easier to deepen them in the plot. The duration of the film is at the perfect point, movies of this type have to be limited because if it does not seem that it is repetitive.
The horror scenes are frightening without a doubt, Leena really manages to be quite violent and when we see that she has some reason for it, that’s when she kills that scares us a lot. The photography of the film is great, a lighter color tone that influences the experience, we certainly won’t have a third sequence and I hope we really don’t have it, also because I believe there’s nothing else to show…
‘Orphan: First Kill’ is unexpectedly a fine sequel that manages to scare and brings us an younger (and also older?) Esther looking out for more blood.
