When you watch The Roses trailer, you could possibly think this will be a comedic drama or romance, but honestly, it’s far from being that. It is instead a dark comedy with chaotic moments that will leave you laughing for *most* of the time, not always, though. Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman are just as great as you would expect. It’s a film that will show you how miserable and chaotic a relationship can be.
“Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Colman) and Theo (Cumberbatch): successful careers, great kids, an enviable sex life. But underneath the façade of the perfect family is a tinderbox of competition and resentments that’s ignited when Theo’s professional dreams come crashing down.”

It’s incredible how smooth the plot for this film evolves from its beginning to its end. The film starts showcasing how “fine” and healthy is Theo and Ivy’s marriage. I mean, they both have very successful lives, two amazing children and a place to call their home, but as things keep getting worse each day, both of their lives start falling apart and so is their marriage.
Olivia delivers a psychotic performance, she can be nice sometimes but she can also explode out of nowhere and become a wild person. Her character, Ivy, wants to be loved and doesn’t want to ever separate from her husband, but at the same time she only cares about her success and her career. Benedict’s Theo is no different, he’s professional career is falling apart but at least he’s not absent in their kids’ lives! I feel like Theo and Ivy had a lot in common, but only the bad parts.

The cast is full of great actors, hilarious performances from Andy Samberg and Kate McKinnon. This film never takes itself too seriously, it’s a hardcore comedy that will have some great jokes here and there but sometimes they force it too much. One thing that I must highlight is how they insisted on making suicidal jokes and honestly it just didn’t work, it felt forced and then they tried doing the same joke again and yeah… it’s just too much, chill out.
The Roses is a cheesy, chaotic dark comedy that showcases how great Cumberbatch and Colman are together. Some jokes work, some doesn’t, but it’s overall a story about love, hate and their similarities.
