‘M3GAN 2.0’ Review: Hitting Even Lower Standards

As someone who despises the original M3GAN, I must confess I had higher expectations for the sequel. Knowing it was a totally different movie, with a total different tone and plot definitely interested me. But forget about it, because M3GAN 2.0 feels like a cheap Nickelodeon movie that I preferred not to watch. Even with some really fun moments here and there, this film feels not only pointless but so unfunny and sometimes boring.

Two years after M3GAN’s rampage, her creator, Gemma, resorts to resurrecting her infamous creation in order to take down Amelia, the military-grade weapon who was built by a defense contractor who stole M3GAN’s underlying tech.

The movie takes off 2 years after the original, it has all that stuff that (as I mentioned) Nickelodeon films have. Hidden cave under the house, opening sequence showing the villain, cringe scenes and all that stuff. It’s hard to say good things about a film like this, because I feel like many would consider this some “dumb fun” and will definitely have a blast watching it. I mean sure it’s a popcorn flick with a dumb plot and dumb characters. It’s not an offensive film, its just not good at all. You’ve seen movies like this so many times before.

The original cast is back but now to team up with M3GAN, the film takes a while to get going but once it does then we have all the M3GAN scenes. And dare I say this film does not have as much remarkable scenes that the main character had in the first film. I feel like she was so underused, they recycled scenes from the first movie and tried to make the same jokes. It’s a poor, soulless, weak film that clearly was just made because money speaks louder than creativity.

The villain is basically what M3GAN was in the first film, but slightly stronger than her. Amelia is not an awful villain but instead just the generic type we know, never menacing or threatening. You know she’ll be defeated and you know how she’ll be defeated. Everything is so predictable that you don’t even take anything serious. I feel like they could’ve explored some themes further, M3GAN’s relationship with Cady is an example of that. That could’ve been something cool to explore but let’s focus on cringey dances and fight scenes instead I guess.

M3GAN 2.0 is a unfunny, generic and sometimes boring return for the iconic doll. It has some moments that will leave you intrigued but for the most part of the film you just gotta suck it up and wait for it to end. A pointless sequel.

Rating: 1.5 out of 5.

M3GAN 2.0 releases in theaters on June 27.
