On September 20th, Transformers One released in theaters and it was a harsh start for the auto bots as they opened to only $26.3M domestically and $39M globally. Becoming the worst opening for the entire franchise, which ended up being very disappointing considering the high quality this film had an the buzz for a sequel.
With a $75M budget, Transformers One needs at least $150M to be considered somehow a success. However, the film has been slowly increasing its popularity, especially because a X/Twitter user called @TFHypeGuy has been promoting the film on social media and has gained over 20.000 followers on the past weekend. And no, it’s not a bot nor a paid account, confirms the user to The StreamR.
We spoke to the hype guy himself and he talks about his passion for this film and how he has had a huge role in this film’s marketing campaign. When asked about his motivation for doing all of this for free, he says: My motivation is simple, unwavering and undying love for the Transformers franchise that started when I was only 5! I love this franchise and it truly just means the absolute world to me and therefore its success means a lot to me as well. The more successful the more I get to see Transformers on the big screen. Genuinely nothing makes me happier than a new Transformers movie release.
The “Transformers hype guy” also says a Transformers One trilogy is needed because this film was “simply a masterpiece” and “the best film of the franchise” and “I am DYING to see more from the team behind Transformers One.” According to the user, everyone must see the film in theaters “because its genuinely just so good. Its such a fun, heartwarming and heartbreaking film. The film has some serious deep themes and messaging behind it. The message that you can become better than you are told, you can be something other than you are assigned. You can choose your own path. As the movie tells you ‘What defines a transformer is not the cog in their chest, but the spark in their core.’ The spark to change your world for the better. Basically saying you are in charge of your own destiny with the ‘spark’ representing a soul.”
The user also comments about becoming so popular lately after gaining over 20.000 followers on the past weekend. He states: “it’s been interesting to say the least. Lots of emotions and excitements I truly cannot process because its all happening so quickly. Its actually kinda tough to balance managing the account, taking in what is happening and responding to my countless messages and mentions. But i’ll say its been very rewarding, been running this since May 2022 and I have felt seen many times. But this is by far the MOST SEEN I have ever felt. I feel seen, I feel heard.
Our guess? Well, we must consider that Transformers is still a very popular franchise and can make millions of dollars on merchandise only. In 2023, we had a very similar case with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem where the film grossed only $181M globally on a $70M budget, which was enough for a sequel. Even with the low box office numbers, the film was one of the most profitable films of that year due to merchandise sales. It’s safe to say that Transformers One will very likely receive a sequel treatment and expect an announcement very soon, that would be our guess.
