We started off the year with the first part of Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths, which was the first of three total parts to be released this year, and the conclusion to the Tomorrowverse, which started back in 2020 with the release of Superman: Man of Tomorrow. It’s now July, and the third and final part of Crisis on Infinite Earths has finally been released digitally and concluded what was an 11-year storyline starting all the way back in 2013 with Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox.
We’ve been lucky enough to get the opportunity to interview Meg Donnelly, who voices Supergirl in Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part 3 and also voiced her prior in the first two parts and Legion of Superheros. She also voiced Harbinger in the first two parts of this trilogy. We got to find out when she found out the Tomorrowverse was leading towards this story, how her Supergirl audition went, who she wants to play in the MCU, and so much more!

THH: Nice to speak with you Meg, how are you doing today?
Meg: Good, really good!
THH: I’m doing pretty well! I just finished watching Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part 3, which had an emotional ending to your character’s story. I actually wanted to add this to my first question. Supergirl meets her tragic end just like her comic counterpart in the Crisis on Infinite Earths and I wanted to ask, was this a story arc that you’ve known about since Legion of Superheros or was it something you found out closer to production for this trilogy?
Meg: Yeah, it was something that was closer to the trilogy of films. As we started doing this trilogy and they were talking about the comics, and I started putting two and two together saying, “I think I know where this is going”, but when we really talked about it when we were recording the audio for [Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths] Part 3, it was something that we dove into a lot more. Wes and Butch, who are kind of in charge of the recordings were talking about the different reiterations of the comics, like that specific comic and how iconic it is for Superman and Supergirl. It was really surreal but it definitely was something that was closer to production.
THH: Had you read the comics beforehand or did you read it recently in preparation for this role in this specific story arc?
Meg: I have seen that picture of Superman carrying Supergirl since I was little cause I loved reading comics since I was younger and that was something that I saw in every comic book store posters everywhere because it’s just a really, really iconic comic. But in doing this series, I think I like read more into the comics of, different reiterations of Supergirl just to help with this interpretation of her. It was really helpful and Supergirl is just awesome.
THH: She’s literally my favourite DC character amongst many others. This isn’t your first time voicing a comic character, you got to voice Scream in the 2020 cartoon Spider-Man. I wanted to ask, was there anything that you’ve taken from that role or since you started voice acting that you were able to bring across to the Tommorowverse as we know it.
Meg: Yeah, that was really fun. I think, voicing Scream, I got a glimpse of what it’s like to do animation specifically for like superhero and and kind of comic book characters because especially with the fight scenes. There’s so much like once it’s animated and there’s like a rough draft there’s so much kind of sound effects that you do in the fight scenes specifically and that was really interesting to grasp at first because it’s a lot of like Like, you know,[Imitating fighting sounds], a lot of breathing, a lot of pretending to run. So getting that kind of awkward nerves out of the way and just happily making a fool out of yourself and the more crazy you go with it, the more realistic it is. Scream was just all these like weird noises, coming out. It definitely helped with the nerves of doing Supergirl.
THH: There were talks earlier in the year that you auditioned to play Supergirl in the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film. If there’s any truth to that, I wanted to know how did the audition process go for that and if there was a reason for why you decided to jump from being Supergirl in animation to Supergirl in live action.
Meg: , I mean playing Supergirl in any capacity has always been a dream of mine. So being able to voice her was incredible and, being able to audition for the live action Supergirl was just a dream come true. I still don’t believe it was fully real. I got to do screen tests and, and kind of do stunt work and scene work and stuff in Atlanta. Just being able to say that I did that, is just really emotional and kind of crazy. So hopefully in the future, I would love to be involved with DC in any way. I think, you know, it just happened to go a different direction, but, um, the fact that I was considered is just bonkers.
THH: It’s a big accomplishment and knowing James Gunn, it seems like always keeps people in mind form previous auditions. So we never know, maybe in the next couple of years, we could see you in a DCU project.
Meg: Yeah, no, fingers crossed. That’d be incredible, him and everybody involved at DC and the team that he works with are like the nicest people and care so much about the comics and fans and what they think.
I know it’s going to be incredible so I’m really excited for them. So fingers crossed that, that comes to fruition, but I’m just so honored that, that happened.
THH: Are there any other DC characters that you’d want to play in live action?
Meg: I was just thinking about this. Honestly to be a part of the DC world at all would be incredible. There’s so many to choose from. I honestly don’t, I don’t know. Um, yeah, I, I don’t know.
THH: Any would make you happy!
Meg: Yes. Yeah. I think to be able to play a superhero, um, like another animated version of a superhero or live action would just be unreal.
THH: Going back to Spider Man, I personally would love to see you play Gwen Stacy in the next Spider Man movie, but who would you like to play if you had the opportunity to appear in the MCU?
Meg: In the MCU? Ooh. I mean, I would, Gwen Stacy, I love. I love her so that that would be really cool or like Spider-Gwen would be really cool. I don’t think they’re planning on it, but a live version of the spider verse that would be cool because she’s really awesome. There’s so many.
My friend just sent me the other day like, Dazzler from X Men and she was like, I should go as her for Halloween and I was like that’d be cool.
THH: X-Men is something that they’re currently working on, so it is a possibility.
Meg: Yeah, that would be cool!
THH: I have one more question for you. You’ve been working on the latest installment of the Zombies franchise, Dawn of the Vampires. I was wondering if there’s anything you could tell us about it, maybe Any hints on when it might be releasing? As some think it might be coming out later this year, some think it’s coming out next year.
Meg: We just finished filming in early June. So I think it probably will be next year, I’m not a hundred percent sure but I am very excited. It’s kind of like me, Milo, Chandler and Kylie are back and the movie is kind of like passing the torch to these five new kids who are vampires and Daywalkers, and they are so talented and so incredible, and it really reminds me of the Disney I grew up on, like kind of rock, like Camp Rock or High School Musical or Hannah Montana. I don’t think Disney has done that in a while so I’m really excited about it. It feels very Nostalgic, it’s really exciting.
THH: Honestly, I’m looking forward to what you have coming in the near future and looking forward to Zombies. I know you have the current Zombies: The Re-Animated Show on Disney+. Hoping to see you in the future and maybe a DC or Marvel project. It’s been a pleasure speaking to you. Thank you for your time.
