We already had many German Netflix original series in the last few years, some better than the others. The only one I can say I watched it entirely and enjoyed it was Dark which is definitely the most popular one and most remarkable one. Dark was a banger in every way possible but we’re to talk about Netflix’s latest German limited series titled Dear Child and get ready for another successful show because this one is simply spectacular.
Dear Child tells the story of Lena, Lena lives in complete isolation together with the two children Hannah and Jonathan in a highly secured home. They eat their meals, go to the toilet and to bed at precisely prescribed times. As soon as he enters the room, they line up to show their hands. They obey to everything he says. Until the young woman manages to escape. After a near fatal car accident, she is hospitalized, accompanied by Hannah. But the true extent of this nightmare is revealed with the arrival of Lena’s parents at the hospital the same night. They have been desperately searching for their missing daughter for almost 13 years.
Since the beginning the story has you hooked, it’s so intense that you will be on the edge of your seat for most of the time. The performances are phenomenal and they are the most special part of this project, a talented cast with an amusing chemistry and they always manage a way to express their emotions in the best way possible.
This show will intrigue you from the start, raising a plethora of questions without providing a clear indication of when or how they will answer them. Each episode will leave you yearning for more, as you eagerly anticipate the unraveling of these mysteries. The revelations that await will astonish you, as unexpected plot twists keep you engaged and in awe. You have to experience it for yourself, as the sheer impact of these surprises is truly astounding.
The level of cinematography exhibited in this production is exceptional, as is the meticulously crafted soundtrack. While the entire cast delivers impressive performances, there are certain individuals who truly shine. Notably, Naila Schuberth’s portrayal of Hannah is deserving of particular acclaim. With remarkable finesse, Naila effectively conveys a sense of tension and complexity, skillfully concealing the character’s enigmatic nature.
Hans Löw portrayed Gerd in an inspiring manner, showcasing his resilience and determination to overcome the challenges he encountered. The way he tackled each obstacle demonstrated his unwavering commitment to solving the case at hand. Haley Louise Jones also deserves recognition for her outstanding performance as a strong, empowered character.
While the series is undoubtedly impressive overall, it does have a few shortcomings, primarily in terms of pacing. At times, certain predictable moments were unnecessarily drawn out, and there were instances where certain scenes felt superfluous. Additionally, the finale seemed somewhat rushed, which was a bit disappointing considering the extensive build-up throughout the show. Given the high expectations, I had hoped for a more intricate and profound conclusion.
Dear Child is an exceptional series of the year, filled with agony, thrills, and mystery. The performances are phenomenal, leaving you on the edge of your seat. Don’t miss out on this captivating and thrilling rollercoaster. Experience the nail-biting twists and turns of this mesmerizing show. Brace yourself for an unforgettable journey into the unknown.
Dear Child hits Netflix on September 7.
