‘Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget’ Review: A Finger Lickin’ Good Sequel

I must begin this stating how I am the biggest fan of Chicken Run you’ll ever meet, but in this review I’ll try not to be based and give a very concrete opinion about Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget, but honestly, this movie is simply one of the best animated movies I got to see this year.

Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger has finally found her dream – a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world. When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, Ginger’s happy ending seems complete. But back on the mainland the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk – this time, they’re breaking in.

What happens is that: Ginger’s daughter, Molly, escapes from the island because she wants “freedom”, acting just like her mom. But Molly ends up getting purposely caught by the Chicken Farm-Lands, a company that looks like a paradise for chicken but oh well… it’s definitely not.

Mrs. Tweedy is really back! Which is shocking, and what’s even more shocking is that they do not show us how she survived the events of the first movie, which was kind of disappointing for me since we got no depth in her story and past. So yes, the thing that made this movie not be even better than it was, was that Mrs. Tweedy was far from as good as the previous movie, she just looks different, not physically, but she’s not as menacing, as crazy and as terrifying as she was before. Don’t get me wrong, she’s still that chicken psycho but in this movie it felt like she was not only weaker but also more stupid, acting so dumb sometimes, something this our Mrs. Tweedy would never be.

Out of than that, the movie is packed with positive aspects, the score is nostalgic, hearing that theme again is so satisfying. The cast is great, doesn’t even feel like the voices were changed. The characters of this movie are, again, what makes the movie as unique as it’s predecessor. Ginger didn’t change a bit, she’s still that determined chicken that will do the most impossible things to save her people. Rocky changed a lot, but for better! Rocky is smarter, more kind to others but even with all that he still has a little bit of that guy that things he’s better than everyone inside him.

Molly is the perfect addition, she’s so cute and just like her mother, she doesn’t follow the rules, she would risk her life for her best friends. There’s another character called Frizzle, Molly meets her while escaping from her island. Frizzle is also a young chicken, she wants freedom and to be happy, so she’s really convinced that this farm is the perfect place to live, where everyone is happy. The two rats from the first movie are back and in an even. bigger role, I loved those two and I had a blast with their scenes.

I simply loved this movie, the animation is top-notch, the action scenes are exciting (giving some Mission Impossible vibes), the characters are as charismatic as before, the humor is right in time and not forced, it’s really the perfect sequel for this movie. Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget is everything you wanted from a sequel for the original. It’s funny, exciting, packed with some great action scenes, a cast that shines, and pure nostalgia everywhere.
