‘Totally Killer’ Review: A Campy And Funny Time Travel Slasher Madness

Halloween season is hitting hard in 2023 when the subject is movies! We had Saw X and The Fall Of The House Of Usher and now this, horror fans are eating good lately and there’s still more to come with the upcoming Five Nights At Freddy’s coming at the end of the month.

Totally Killer is what Prime Vídeo had for us for this spooky month and I can confirm you that this movie is one of the most enjoyable slashers in recent times. It’s definitely not the best, it doesn’t have the best script neither (and specially) the visuals. The best thing about this movie is that it doesn’t take itself seriously, it doesn’t try to be something it doesn’t is. The movie recognizes that the idea here is not original but something based in other movies like Back To The Future and Scream and I love the way that this movie references those classics.

When the infamous “Sweet Sixteen Killer” returns 35 years after his first murder spree to claim another victim, 17-year-old Jamie accidentally travels back in time to 1987, determined to stop the killer before he can start.

The killer is called Sweet Sixteen and I’ll be honest with you, this is not another classic serial killer like Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees or Freddy Krueger. Sweet Sixteen killer is clearly parody of the killers we know, and this is mentioned in this movie, scenes where the killer compares himself to one of those popular serial killers I mentioned.

Totally Killer has a simple plot but executes it perfectly and that’s what makes this movie one of the best slashers of the year. Kiernan Shipka simply delivered an outstanding performance as the lead Jamie, she’s determined and charismatic. The comedy of this movie won me totally, there were some laugh out loud stupid moments that had me chuckling.

Even with all of its qualities, this movie is still a streaming movie (which is fine) and the cheap budget was really well shown here. The visual effects are Disney Channel TV show level, it’s really terrible but that doesn’t really affect the story of the movie considering it doesn’t include that much CGI but some killing scenes felt really fake and unfinished.

Not only Kiernan but the whole cast did an amazing job, I must confess I enjoyed more when Jamie was in the past than the present, the way they presented the 80s was really fun and nostalgic, the soundtrack is enjoyable and the vibe the movie transmits is really amusing.

Totally Killer might be your best movie choice for this Halloween season. It’s a campy, funny, enjoyable and bloody slasher that brings lots of references from the classic Horror universe.
