I’m appalled with what I just watched, literally, what the f*ck was that? Around 5 years ago we had The Meg and I remember going to the theaters to witness this piece of cinema and, from what I remember, I had a good time, but I really don’t remember the last time I rewatched this movie, it’s just that type of movie that you watch once and just never care about watching again, it’s not bad, it’s just forgettable.
And years later here we are, Meg 2: The Trench is an insane, adrenaline-packed, bizarre and surreal shark flick starring Jason Statham as the lead. The movie brings a new and different story, and now, Li Bingbing’s character is dead… she had a major role in the first movie and now she is gone and they just act like if they don’t care. Jason’s character, Jonas, had such a great relation with her in the first movie and now she’s barely mentioned or cared about, she was mentioned once from what I remember. Shuya Sophia Cai changed a lot! I remember that she was such a tiny child in the first movie and now she looked like 10 years older, she grew up really fast, her character is definitely one of my favorite things about this movie.

The biggest issue of this movie is how superficial it feels. The movie doesn’t care about the plot at all, it just wants you to see sharks and monsters fighting Jason Statham and that’s it… But that’s what we are expecting right? Statham carries the movie, the plot is so mediocre that sometimes made me chuckle on how many stupid decisions were made by certain characters, a script that tries to follow the easiest path just to get to the part where we see sharks and now… dinosaurs?
If you’re expecting an action-packed movie that challenges the laws of physics and a man (Jonas) that apparently is stronger than Super Man than here you go, this is your movie. I was neither disappointed nor surprised with the movie, I actually had a fine time watching it, it’s that type of movie to just have fun and really just avoid judging because if we take this movie seriously it won’t be as fun as it should be.
And now talking about it’s technical parts, the CGI was mainly good, the megs looked real enough for me and so did the monsters, the action scenes are actually great and the best thing about it, the performances are not that good, we had our standouts like Jason Statham and Page Kennedy which delivered funny and intriguing characters.
I gotta talk about Wu Jing’s character in particular, Jiuming, this guy gotta be the most stupid character I’ve seen in a while, what it feels like is just that this guy is trying to kill himself in a “heroic” way, and sometimes it’s not even heroic and it just feel so stupid. Definitely the worst thing about this movie for me is his character and from what I counted, there were around 8-9 moments where he almost died. On the last time I laughed, seriously, I couldn’t take that seriously.

Overall, Meg 2: The Trench is an adrenaline-packed movie with insane scenes and Jason Statham breaking the laws of physics. It’s exactly what you’d expect it to be, a mediocrily written script with weak performances, but great action scenes to keep you intrigued.
