It’s about time the merc-with-a-mouth finally makes his way to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
On September 27, Ryan Reynolds posted a video on Twitter about the upcoming Deadpool threequel, which is planned to be set within the larger scale of the MCU. While the release date for the movie was revealed, set for September 6th, 2024, the video also revealed a special guest that shocked and (happily) surprised many on social media: the return of none other than Weapon X himself, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. With mutants finally making their appearance in the MCU (thanks to Kamala Khan and soon Namor in Wakanda Forever), it’s no surprise that the two X-Men characters could finally come to the big screen once again and make the mutants a staple within this franchise.
In the tweet, Reynolds discusses missing D23 and talks about renovating Deadpool as a character for his move to the MCU, though unfortunately doesn’t have anything on his mind. However, as he says he has an idea in mind, Hugh Jackman walks into frame as Reynolds asks Jackman to reprise his role as Wolverine. As Jackman says, “Yeah, sure, Ryan,” I Will Always Love You (“you” replaced with Hugh!) plays in the background. As “Coming Hughn” is set on the background, Deadpool’s logo fades into view. After that, Deadpool’s logo is scratched with three adamantium claw marks, signifying Wolverine’s debut to the MCU. The tweet is provided below if you want to see the full video for yourself.
While rumors have spread on what Deadpool 3 could be about, including a road trip between the two mutants before the Disney-Fox merger knocked that idea out the park, we could possibly be seeing the two mutants find a way to the MCU. In the post-credits of Deadpool 2 (spoilers if you haven’t seen it), Wade had his hands on a time-watch that allowed him to travel anywhere in time (like being able to shoot his 2009 counterpart and warn Wolverine that they’ll see each other again!) Though it’s played off as a joke in that movie, could it be a MacGuffin that launches Deadpool and Wolverine into the MCU in the first place? We’ll have to wait and see!
Luckily for fans, Deadpool 3 is keeping the tradition of being R-rated, as stated by the one of the movie’s writers Rhett Reese. From what we’ve seen of the Deadpool movie series so far, the guts and blood will definitely be upped for the MCU’s standards. With positive reviews of Werewolf By Night towards Marvel’s move into that area, we could be seeing more adult and violent content with Blade, Daredevil: Born Again, and a rumored second season of Moon Knight. Nonetheless, Deadpool 3 will make its impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a big way and hopefully, it’ll be another gut-busting, katana-shredding, claw-wrecking addition to this series!
Deadpool 3 is set to release September 6, 2024.
