Is the Obi-Wan Kenobi series underwhelming?

Contains Spoilers for ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’

When ‘The Mandalorian’ season 1 came to a close, most fans were pleased with Lucasfilm’s decision to select Deborah Chow to direct the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series exclusively for Disney+. However, as of yet, most fans are disappointed with her approach to taking the helm of the show. The constant use of shaky cam, no tension and the lacklustre choreography has left most fans with a poor taste in their mouth. You would have thought that the inquisitors, led by Darth Vader, hunting down Kenobi would lead to an intriguing series. However, the problems keep on flooding the show…

The Marketing

The show was marketed as Hayden Christensen’s return to the Star Wars universe however as of yet all we have seen are a couple flashbacks set before ‘Attack of the Clones’. Hayden is not always in Vader’s suit, as shown by a picture on the set which has ultimately disappointed some fans. Leia was not shown in any marketing and when she appeared in the first episode, most assumed that she would only play a small role however she has been a key figure in every episode to date and the frustration is starting to grow among fans, especially after 3 bounty hunters and Obi-Wan himself all could not catch her in a chase on foot.

The Script

A newcomer to the Star Wars universe in Joby Harold caused fans to grow slightly anxious ahead of the show as he only had three writing credits before the show. These fans were correct to be anxious as the show is being heavily weighed down by its script. Massive cracks in the show’s story are starting to be formed, much to the disbelief of the fans. From Vader not walking through a small fire after previously extinguishing one using the force to the Grand Inquisitors’ fake-out death, this show has been riddled with inconsistencies and plot holes which most fans are hoping can be redeemed by the final episode.

The Choreography

Do we even need to talk about the Leia chase scenes? Darth Vader vs Obi-Wan Kenobi was supposed to be the rematch of the century however it fell flat on every level imaginable, from the baseball bat lightsabers to Vader’s confusing motivations, it got it all wrong and we are all hoping that they will fight again in the final episode in order to fix this. Most of the other fight scenes are lacklustre as well, with Reva standing by herself deflecting laser bolts from a speeder and Tala being able to slap a stormtrooper before they can shoot her. The action has been underwhelming and has led to there being zero tension in the series however despite this, most fans will most likely forgive the show if it has an epic finale with plenty of good action scenes.

To conclude, some fans are loving the show and some are not. However, most can agree that this was not the epic story about the hero of the clone wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi that we were promised.
